Dear Fashion People,
I would like for you to consider designing, making, and selling clothing that is actually appropriate to be worn in public. This may seem like a small request, but the evidence shows that this is a difficult, if not impossible, task. I teach high school students. And I am tired of seeing shorts that are too short, shirts that are too low cut, and dresses that would look great on a Las Vegas hooker. Now I know that the correct answer to this is that the parents need to take charge and make better choices for their kids. I also know this isn't happening. (That is a different article that has already been written.)
As the mother of a young daughter, I have the intention of teaching her self-respect, modesty, and good decision making skills. I try to demonstrate these things to her so she can emulate them later in life. I understand and take full responsibility for my daughter and what she wears. This isn't about my daughter. (But you could help matters, as I know she and I will have fights about what is appropriate and not appropriate, by not selling the trashy stuff.)
I am also the mother of a young son. I cannot control what other girls wear. The girls he will be looking at, flirting with, and eventually dating. I will try (with all my might) to teach him how modesty is key and self-respecting girls don't feel the need to flaunt everything they have, but I have a feeling I will be fighting an uphill battle. I see what is out there (and trust me, I see a lot), and I'm afraid my teaching will be overrun by the amount of flesh he sees. He is a boy after all.
I am not dodging my responsibility as a parent. I know, know, know that I have a job to do at home. And I plan on doing it. I think we are already doing it. But as a teacher, as a mother of a son, and as a mother of daughter that I will have to argue with about the clothing options available, I beg of you to make better choices. Help me send the message that covering yourself up in the right way is beautiful and showing the world everything you've got is not (nor is it classy, by the way).
Thank you,
Erin Mills
