I Just Don't Get It

I have this thing that blows my mind.  Every time.   This past week or so, a famous person (although famous for what I cannot say) named Kim had a baby.   People everywhere are talking about it.   She doesn't have a job.   She doesn't contribute anything to society (as far as I can tell - obviously she and I aren't close).   And yet people cannot get enough of her and her baby story - or baby name.   And I just don't get it.   But I didn't get it with a girl named Paris or the girl named Snooki either.   What I am constantly struggling with is:  what does this say about our society?

What does it say about a society that cannot get enough information about someone who is famous for being famous?  Are we not smart enough to recognize the real heroes among us?   Are we not moral enough to get that there are people in the world who work hard every day, try to make the world a better place, and show love to people that should be showered with attention and praise (not that they would want it)?   Are we so shallow that we don't even notice what this kind of thing says about us?   Are we so covetous of all the attention and money that these people get that we fail to notice what is actually going on in our world?

I read a blog this morning written by a former student's wife.  She works in a children's home in Honduras where she ministers to kids who have lived on the street, been addicted to drugs, and actually get shot in the street.   I don't think I can change the heart of America, but I know I can work on my own.    Because I am afraid that the American fascination with the Kims, Lindseys, and Snookies is a resounding testament of what we value, appreciate, and care about.   And, frankly, I just don't get it.
