For the last 13 school years, I have had the privilege of working for a superintendent that showed those who work for him how to be passionate about what you do. Charles Dyer hired me at the very end of May 1998. I will never forget sitting across the desk from him (with my principal, Jerry Valentine, to my left). He didn't ask many questions. We really just had a pleasant little conversation. And then, what seemed like out of nowhere, he said, "We are offering you the job." Just like that. I almost fell out of my chair. That was the beginning of my working relationship with him. Since that time, I have been in awe of how hard he has fought to improve education in Arkansas - not just Alma, lobbied against what he knew to be detrimental to our mission, and how much he truly loved the Alma Schools and being an Airedale. He loved Alma so much that this was his 45th year here.
Today Mr. Dyer passed away after battle with cancer. I think only one person in our district knows what it is like to have an Alma without him. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and all the friends that cherished him. Our district is so amazing because of his hard work and strong beliefs that Alma was the best. I hope we can continue on the path that he has so firmly placed us on.
