A couple of weeks ago in Sunday School, our teacher asked us, "Who was to blame for the death of Jesus?" He read us something that went through the list of people who could have been at fault for the death of the Savior. I had a thought - scary, I know - in the middle of that. We all reject Jesus for some reason or another. Those of us who are Christians may not reject him altogether, but we do reject him. We disobey his teachings, we don't behave in a way that brings glory to his name, we are merciless, and lots of other sinful ways. This is what I came up with:
Person - Reason for rejection
Judas - Greed. He walked alongside Jesus and for thirty pieces of silver, betrayed him.
Herod - Power. If Jesus is the King of the Jews, how will Herod ever be as important as he
intended.
Pilate - Peer pressure. He didn't want to indict Jesus. He tried not to, but in the end, he
did as the crowd wanted.
Pharisees - Fear/Rule Following/Misguided notions. They followed the rules, to the letter.
They had an idea of what the Messiah would do and act like upon arrival. Here
was a guy who claimed to be the Savior yet he was not riding in on a horse and
establishing the kingdom, he was hanging out with non-rule followers.
Thief on the cross - Bitterness. Jesus could have saved all of them, but he didn't.
I am sure there are others, but you get the gist. The thing that really hit me in Sunday School that day was that we can relate to these people. Maybe it is fear. Maybe it is greed. Maybe it is about control. Which one of these mirrors you?
