This afternoon I had a conversation with a student. This particular student is very intelligent and capable of anything, but she makes stupid choices. She is now in the situation where she must pass everything in order to graduate. At one point in the conversation I told her, "I want you to succeed, but I won't succeed for you. I won't do what you need to do to get there." As I was driving home, I had an Aha moment. Don't you think that is what God thinks about us all the time? He wants us to do well. He has given us the skills and tools we need to be successful, and yet we (and by we, I mean me) make stupid choices. We squander our time and resources because, as my student said, "I just didn't feel like doing it." But then we realize - and sometimes too late - that we have missed an opportunity.
This girl, who doesn't believe that God exists, taught me a lesson about what God wants for us. I like this young lady. I long for her to get out of this funk and do what she needs to do. But just like God won't make us do something, I won't force her. And if she fails to get it together and doesn't graduate, it will break my heart. Just like I break God's heart when I am disobedient or apathetic or fail to get it together. And this is the lesson I learned today.
