We don't have a fall break in Arkansas, and that, my friends, is a crying shame. Not that it would come 3 1/2 weeks into school if we had one, but it is the thought that counts. This past weekend we did one of my favorite things - watched the Airedales win in their season opener. Can I tell you something? It was hot. Maybe not as hot as it could have been, but it was too hot to sit outside for that long surrounded by that many people. But we won, football season is official, and I had a nice visit with my friend, Mary. The next morning we had a yard sale. We were up at 5:30 and then by the afternoon, it was hot - again. And I am just not sure my weak, out of shape, and old body has recovered from the heat and loss of sleep. Maybe by Christmas break I can catch up.
I am tired of something else, too. You know I love college football. It really is my favorite season of the year. But I am sick to death of Johnny Manziel. There is no doubt this young man is a talented athlete. He will carry his team to many victories this season. But his lack of respect for his team, the league he plays in, and the other players who play hard because they love the game overwhelms me. His shenanigans drive me crazy whether he is flaunting his celebrity with court side seats or making snide remarks about the very place that is giving him a chance of a lifetime. I guess it is the mother and teacher in me that would like to sit down with him and explain that he is presenting himself in such a classless way that people will never see past his persona. He doesn't let his play tell the story; he is too busy seeking fame and personal glory. And I am tired of Johnny Football. (I am not so secretly hoping that Alabama cleans his clock this weekend. A little humility goes a long way, Johnny.)
On a completely unrelated note, the house is moving along. The drywall process has been a long one but that was finished up today. The brick is being completed a section at a time. The cabinets will probably be in place in a couple of days. And they will be ready for the trim by Friday or Monday. We will have to meet with a painter to decide on our colors for everything from walls, ceiling, trim, doors, and cabinets. Then we have to pick our tile and countertops. So maybe this isn't off the subject. Just the list reminds me that I am tired - and that isn't likely to change anytime soon.
